What is IS 12592?
IS 12592 is the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specification that establishes requirements for precast concrete manhole covers and frames. First published and subsequently revised, this standard covers materials, dimensions, mechanical properties, testing methods and marking requirements for concrete manhole covers used in Indian infrastructure projects. All government and municipal procurement mandates IS 12592 compliance, and Himalaya holds a valid BIS license under this standard.
Scope of IS 12592
The standard applies to precast reinforced and unreinforced concrete covers and frames for use in manholes and other underground chambers. It covers covers for both vehicular and non-vehicular applications and specifies the load classes required for different locations.
Load Classes Under IS 12592
IS 12592 defines load classes based on the maximum load the cover must support. The classification broadly aligns with BS EN 124:2015 European standards. Class B125 covers are rated for pedestrian and light vehicular areas such as footpaths and residential driveways. Class C250 covers are suitable for slow-moving vehicular traffic in car parks, service areas and roads with restricted vehicle access. Class D400 covers are rated for main roads, national highways and airport aprons where heavy vehicles operate and are the most commonly specified class for road carriageways.
Material and Manufacturing Requirements
IS 12592 mandates that covers and frames be manufactured from concrete with a minimum compressive strength of 25 MPa. Reinforced covers must use deformed steel bars conforming to IS 1786. The standard specifies mix design, curing requirements and dimensional tolerances that manufacturers must comply with. Himalaya uses M30 grade concrete and HYSD reinforcement bars in all IS 12592 products, exceeding the minimum material requirements.
Testing Requirements
Products claiming IS 12592 compliance must undergo type testing at a BIS approved laboratory. Tests include load testing, residual strength test after load removal, and dimensional verification. Himalaya conducts regular testing through accredited laboratories and maintains test records as part of its quality management system certified to ISO 9001:2015.
BIS Certification and Licensing
To supply products claiming IS 12592 compliance to government and municipal projects, manufacturers must hold a valid BIS license under the BIS Certification Mark Scheme (also known as the ISI mark). The BIS conducts factory audits and surprise inspections to verify ongoing compliance. Himalaya holds a valid BIS license and all products carry the ISI certification mark, as required for government procurement in India.
How to Verify IS 12592 Compliance
When procuring manhole covers for projects, specifiers and procurement teams should request the manufacturer certificate of conformance, the BIS license number visible on the product or documentation, and recent test certificates from BIS approved laboratories. The BIS license number can be verified on the BIS Care website. Himalaya provides all compliance documentation as standard with every supply and welcomes third-party inspection at its Ahmedabad manufacturing facility.
